Concept · Account placement
What is asset location?
Direct answer Asset location is the choice of which account type holds which investment: taxable, traditional IRA or 401(k), Roth, or HSA. Return that already gets a low rate (long-term gains, qualified dividends) belongs in the taxable account; return that would be taxed as ordinary income or short-term gains belongs where turnover is not taxed.
Not asset allocation: the mix is chosen first, and location decides which account holds each piece of it.
The account decides the rate. A traditional IRA taxes every dollar coming out as ordinary income, whatever earned it, so a long-term gain earned inside loses its low rate and a short-term gain loses nothing it would not have lost anyway. A Roth taxes nothing coming out. A taxable account taxes by return type.
So the sorting key is turnover, not asset class. High-turnover exposure goes into the shelter, patient index exposure stays in taxable. The Account placement topic walks through it in four short reads.
