The decision record to Dec · 12 entries
| When | Decision | State | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 2022 | Equity share lever, on: from "60/40 in every account" to "80/20, two earners with wage-like income". | Accepted | Two earners with wage-like income; the bond sleeve was set by a target-date default, not by the household |
| Feb 2022 | Fund wrapper lever, on: from "Active mutual fund, 84 bps all-in" to "Index ETF, 6 bps all-in". | Accepted | The active fund's 84 bps and yearly gain distributions bought nothing the index ETF does not |
| Feb 2022 | A lot of employer stock vested 2021-03 crosses one year on 2022-03-31; a sale before then is short-term at 54.1%. | Accepted | The 2021 vest lot crosses one year in March; it is held until then, and any diversification sale waits for the long-term rate |
| Mar 2022 | Factor tilt lever, on: from "Cap-weighted market" to "Value tilt at 2% tracking error (French HML)". | Deferred | Wait for the March vest to settle before adding tracking error |
| Apr 2022 | Asset location lever, on: from "Same mix in every account" to "Bonds in the deferred accounts first, equity in taxable, Roth and HSA". | Accepted | Bonds move to the 401(k)s; the taxable account stops paying ordinary rates on interest |
| May 2022 | Factor tilt lever, on: from "Cap-weighted market" to "Value tilt at 2% tracking error (French HML)". | Accepted | Tilt added inside the sheltered accounts, where its turnover is free |
| Jun 2022 | Rebalancing discipline lever, on: from "Drift, new cash at target weights" to "Calendar rebalance each June, sheltered accounts first". | Accepted | First calendar rebalance; the sheltered accounts absorb the trades |
| Jul 2022 | The Health savings account contribution did not arrive this month; the rule proposes restarting it. | Accepted | HSA payroll deduction restarted |
| Sep 2022 | Loss harvesting lever, on: from "No harvesting, average cost" to "Annual loss harvesting, highest cost first, wash-sale window honored". | Accepted | September losses harvested into a substitute fund; the wash-sale window runs to mid-October |
| Oct 2022 | A wash-sale window is open until 2022-10-31: the fund sold at a loss cannot be bought back before then. | Deferred | Swap back after the window closes |
| Nov 2022 | Nothing needs to change this month: drift is inside the band, no lot is below threshold, every contribution arrived. | Accepted | Drift inside the band; no lots below threshold |
| Dec 2022 | Nothing needs to change this month: drift is inside the band, no lot is below threshold, every contribution arrived. | Accepted | Year end: drift inside the band, the harvest done, every contribution arrived; the 2022 vest lot is held until it crosses one year |
The six rules and their tests
- Drift above band
- the household's actual equity share is more than the rebalance band away from the mix lever's target
- Harvestable loss
- one or more taxable lots are priced more than the harvest threshold below their cost basis
- Wash sale open
- a harvest sale inside the wash-sale window has not yet reached its end date
- Contribution lapsed
- an account's scheduled monthly contribution did not arrive this month
- Holding period crossing
- a lot will cross from short-term to long-term within the next month
- Nothing to do
- none of the other five rules fired
How to read this
- What is left
- Earned is what the household's mix and strategy compound to over 20 years before any cost or tax. Kept is the after-tax liquidation value at the horizon, with the decisions made so far switched on. As found is the same household with none of them.
- The month
- Twelve scripted months on the returns of 2022: contributions, dividends, a vest, a rebalance date, a harvest window, a drawdown that is a historical window, not a draw.
- A row's figure
- The change in what is kept in the month the decision was accepted, so the rows and the as-found figure add up to the total in every month. Decisions interact, so the order matters; the waterfall under Implement stacks the same six in decision order. Not every decision pays in every window: two of the six cost money on these 20 years.
- The rules
- Six tests on the household's state. Each fires or does not; a proposal carries the rule and its plain statement, and ends as accepted, deferred or rejected, with the reason and the date. Nothing is a recommendation and nothing executes.
Method
- Household A: taxable plus two 401(k)s, an IRA, a Roth, an HSA, and a concentrated employer-stock position; two earners; 20-year horizon.
- Public series only: Kenneth French, AQR, FRED, Shiller. Generated 2026-09-16 by
